A physical server behaves differently from a virtual machine
If hardware fails, a virtual machine can restart on another host in the infrastructure. A physical server cannot: someone has to work on the hardware, or a second machine has to have been planned for.
This is why we always discuss the continuity strategy at the same time as the hardware. Depending on your availability requirement, a mixed architecture — a physical server for the load, virtual machines for recovery — is sometimes the right answer.
